Dentist in Málaga specializing in cosmetic dentistry

Endodontics, also known as root canal treatment, is a procedure that removes infected or damaged dental pulp from inside the tooth, cleaning and sealing the root canals to preserve the tooth.

This treatment is necessary when the dental pulp is irreversibly affected by deep cavities, trauma, fractures, or infections that cause persistent pain, extreme sensitivity, tooth discoloration, or abscess formation.

Most teeth can be treated with endodontic therapy. However, some teeth with severe fractures, severely damaged roots, or insufficient bone support may not be candidates for the treatment.

Root canal treatment is also the appropriate procedure to eliminate the infection causing the abscess and save the affected tooth.

First, local anesthesia is administered and a rubber dam is placed to isolate the tooth. Then, an opening is made in the tooth’s crown to access the root canals, which are cleaned and disinfected. Finally, they are filled with gutta-percha, and the tooth is sealed with a temporary or permanent restoration.

Generally, the treatment can be completed in a single session. However, in complex cases or depending on the condition of the tooth, two or more sessions may be required.

Thanks to local anesthetics and modern techniques, endodontic treatment is usually virtually painless. However, mild discomfort may occur after the procedure due to inflammation of the surrounding tissues.

After treatment, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing. Additionally, you should follow the dentist’s recommendations regarding the use of medication to relieve any potential discomfort and attend periodic check-ups.

If the root canal treatment is not performed, the infection can spread, causing increased pain and a risk of tooth loss. In severe cases, the infection can spread to other parts of the body.

The primary alternative is the extraction of the affected tooth, followed by the placement of a dental implant or bridge. However, preserving the natural tooth is always preferable for aesthetic and functional reasons.

After root canal treatment and tooth restoration, the tooth will function just like any other natural tooth. Maintaining good oral hygiene and attending regular check-ups is essential to ensure the longevity of the treatment.

Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment may be more susceptible to fractures if not properly restored. In many cases, the placement of a crown is recommended to protect and strengthen the treated tooth.

In some cases, the teeth may darken slightly after treatment. This change is more common if the tooth was already discolored prior to the root canal procedure. Cosmetic treatments are available to correct the discoloration.
